Tanauan may have derived it's name from the Tagalog term "tanaw" meaning "to view or to see". This is based in a fortress which had a watchtower built by the Augustinian friars and natives. The watchtower allowed them to monitor incoming "champans" or boats entering through the Pansipit river, which were either traders or pirates. From this tower, one can have a clear view (tanaw) of the lake and of the vast plains and rolling hills.
Tanauan may have also been named after a shrub "tanawa" which grew abundantly in the area and on the shores of "Lake Bonbon" (now Lake Taal) during the town's early history.
Accessible in less than 2 hours south of Metro Manila, the City of Tanauan is a remarkable mixture of the old and the new, the historical and the modern. Revolutionary thinker Apolinario Mabini and former President Jose P. Laurel were born in Tanauan.
The City is the skydiving capital of the Philippines. The drop zone between Mt. Makiling and Taal Volcano, showcases some of the most spectacular scenery in the country.
Tanauan is located on the northeastern part of Batangas Province, one of only three cities in Batangas. Its naturally cool climate, good quality main roads, beautiful scenery make Tanauan the preferred choice for local tourists, entrepreneurs and residents.
